Geography
Our Intent in Geography
Our curriculum approach to Geography reflects our school vision to create learners that are reflective, curious, independent, collaborative, resilient and respectful. At KEPS, we want all children to develop a curiosity about their environment around them and the wider world and its countries and continents. We want children to recognise how the human and physical geography of a location makes it different to another and make comparisons. We want children to reflect on how their daily actions can affect their local environment and the wider world and what they can do to protect and respect it. We want children to experience and understand their own locality as much as possible through local visits and trips, walks in our immediate school locality, workshops and inviting people into our school to share their expertise about our local area and beyond.
Our Implementation in Geography
At KEPS, geography is taught discreetly within a teaching sequence of work. Each unit of work focuses on a range of objectives taken from the National Curriculum, with progression of key skills being built upon as the children move through the years. A geographer at KEPS will:
- Ask and answer questions to improve their understanding of the world around them.
- Develop an understanding of where they live and the surroundings through the use of maps, atlases and globes.
- Build upon previous learnt knowledge to locate countries and describe human and physical features studied.
- Use the local and surrounding areas to complete fieldwork to support study.
- Gain independence in skills involving fieldwork, map work and enquiry.
- Talk about geography and how it relates to careers and life skills.
- Show enthusiasm for their geography learning and experiences.
