Kingsbury Episcopi Primary School
Our curriculum reflects KEPS’ own rich history within the context of the local area. At KEPS we make full use of resources within the immediate and wider local area enabling children to develop a deep understanding of the rich history of their locality and beyond. In particular, we are keen for pupils to discover their own passion for Historical enquiry and develop a key KEPS attribute; Curiosity.
We aim for all children to enquire, engage with and understand Britain’s historical past and history of the wider world. We intend for children’s confidence to build by providing them with the knowledge and skills to ask pertinent questions that will develop their curiosity. Children will understand people’s lives, make comparisons over different periods of time and understand how their own lives have been influenced by changes and challenges in the past. Children will take part in trips that will engage them and bring historical learning to life, through workshops and visiting different museums/galleries as well as focused, well planned residential visits. Key vocabulary is introduced and reinforced as a central strand running through teaching and learning at KEPS. At KEPS, children are taught historical knowledge, enquiry and concepts with a focus on chronology and guided by National Curriculum objectives for each Key Stage. Historical periods are revisited with skills and concepts built upon in further year groups by chaining backwards and forwards.
History will be taught through sequences which develop and progress historical skills in line with the learning objectives stated in the National Curriculum. We follow and adapt plans from a range of sources including Hamilton Trust which all link to National Curriculum objectives from each key stage. In addition to subject-specific learning, we make use of strong, relevant cross-curricular links, including geography, design and technology and art to embed the learning and provide greater depth across a range of subjects. We ensure learning provides opportunities for cross-curricular cognition. Topic planning shows how our long-term plan for history feeds into the short-term plans for each term and clearly demonstrate how history learning episodes are increasing the depth of understanding and range of knowledge throughout the primary years.
We will adapt our provision in the history curriculum by setting suitable learning challenges, responding to pupils’ diverse learning needs, and overcoming potential barriers. We may choose objectives for pupils with SEND that are different from those of the rest of the class or modify the curriculum to remove barriers so all pupils meet the same objectives.
Our over-view showing which units are taught when can be found below, along with a break down of the objectives covered in each unit, and the progression of key skills across our curriculum.
